A four-day walkthrough of the Royal Opera House Muscat sound infrastructure, from stage connection boxes and tie lines to the COMMS room patch bays, amp room and loudspeaker systems.
Training dates: 11 to 15 April 2021
Training overview
Diego Biagioni led a four-day tour of the building’s sound infrastructure, following the signal from the stage to the amplifiers. Day 1 covered how signals travel through the building on analogue, AES and powered loudspeaker tie lines, from the stage connection boxes to the COMMS room patch bay. Day 2 looked at the set-up for an amplified concert, including the Avid Stage 64 boxes, the monitor and front of house desks, the amp room and the Galileo, Galaxy and Compass loudspeaker management. Day 3 covered non-amplified concerts in the concert shell, with the Optocore links and the gallery and proscenium loudspeakers, and Day 4 was spent reading a visiting show’s technical specification, input list and stage plan and mapping them onto ROHM’s stage areas.
- Day 1: signal transmission, analogue copper cables, stage connection boxes (SCBs), single and multi audio tie lines (MAT), AES and powered loudspeaker tie lines, and the COMMS room patch bay
- Day 2: amplified concert set-up, including the auditorium acoustic layout, MAT boxes and Avid Stage 64, cockpit and monitor desks, control room and amp room patch bays, Galileo, Galaxy and Compass loudspeaker management, line arrays, ground stacks and subs
- Day 3: non-amplified concert set-up, including the concert shell, stage and orchestra pit connections, Optocore, fly gallery and proscenium loudspeakers
- Day 4: reading a show’s technical specification, input and output lists, stage plans, and stage area mapping in Arabic and English
Training milestones
- Signal paths traced from stage to COMMS room, control room and amp room
- Amplified and non-amplified concert configurations understood
- A show technical specification and stage plan read and interpreted
Next steps
Staff will apply this knowledge by preparing the patch for an upcoming production and shadowing the technical specification review for a visiting company.
