The 2021 intake continued the microphones course with Shure history and polar patterns, finishing with practical sessions using measurement software at ROHM.

Training dates: December 2020 to September 2021

Training overview

The 2021 intake moved on to Shure history and polar patterns, studying the material online before practical sessions at ROHM in August 2021. As with the first run of the course, REW software was used to measure and display frequency response, and trainees compared the SM58, SM57, KM183, KM184, 414 and KSM8 by ear. The practical ended with a proximity effect test across cardioid, supercardioid and omni microphones, followed by individual quizzes.

  • REW used to show frequency response and voice intelligibility
  • SM58 and SM57 compared, including the SM58 with and without its grille
  • SM58 compared with KM183, KM184 and 414 microphones in omni and cardioid
  • The two diaphragms of the Shure KSM8, and its omnidirectional behaviour at low frequencies
  • Proximity effect tested across cardioid, supercardioid and omni microphones

Training milestones

  • Pre-quiz assessments completed (July to August 2021)
  • Final quizzes completed (August to September 2021)
  • Practical measurement and listening sessions completed (5 and 30 August 2021)

Next steps

The next step is Session 3, comparing dynamic, condenser and ribbon microphone types and build.
