Training overview
Sound staff attended a five-day audio engineering short course at SAE Institute in Dubai, working in Pro Tools throughout. The course began with the fundamentals of sound and Pro Tools editing, then moved on to setting up and recording multitrack sessions, including comping takes and using fades. Trainees compared mono and stereo microphone techniques (Mid/Side, AB and XY) in the studio, mixed with EQ, compression, delay and reverb, and finished by mastering and bouncing a final mix, which formed their assessed project.
- Fundamentals of sound: measurement, wavelength and amplitude, sound versus audio
- Pro Tools: edit modes, editing, multitrack session set-up, groups, colour coding and imports
- Recording in Pro Tools: record modes, comping, fades and crossfades
- Mono and stereo microphone techniques (Mid/Side, AB, XY) and finding the sweet spot of an instrument
- Mix balance, EQ, compression and sidechain, delay and reverb on aux sends
- Introduction to mastering, a mastering chain, final mix bounce and review
Training milestones
- A multitrack session recorded, edited and mixed in Pro Tools
- Stereo microphone techniques compared in the studio
- Final project mixed and mastered, and SAE certificates of completion awarded
Next steps
Staff will apply the recording and mixing workflow to ROHM concert recordings and post-production.
